Orc Boyz Painting Update

Greetings!

Apologies on the late post here but I will be putting this one up along with my session review today so we'll get two for the price of one. The goal with the Orc Boyz this past week was to try and see about making the leather look a bit better. I am not sure that I succeeded to be honest but I did manage to make the highlights pop a bit more with this method than I did with the old one. Pictures below.

The Setup
Once I got going, I touched up the brown a bit and added some wash over it to really darken up the deeper places in the model.

After the Wash

Agrax Earthsomething. It's the GW brown wash.
Once they had dried, I mixed together the dark brown I had been using with some khaki and yellow. I was really looking to create kind of a golden brown color for the leather by dry brushing the color over the dark brown inked with Agrax.

Mixing Elements

After the first application
After the first application, I added in a bit more of both yellow and khaki to continue to lighten the color.

Second Application
For the third and final application I added more yellow, more khaki and about 2 or 3 drops of white to really get the highest details to pop.

Final result

Closeup of the final result
Welp, overall they look a little better than the original models. The deep places look better in contrast to the multi-layered highlights. I still don't think I ended up with what I had in my head to be honest but, it will do for now. Perhaps when I finish them and get some extra time, I can go back and try again.

Anyone out there know how to paint leather well?

Orc Boyz Update

Greetings!

I finally managed to get some painting done after a VERY hectic week two weeks ago. This past week, however, I got in about two and a half hours to work on the Boyz. I decided that since I am lacking arms on a good portion of them, I would paint up the 10 that I had already started to paint to completion. That will give me 15 complete Orc Boyz. Then, once I get the necessary bits for the remaining part of the unit, I will work on them. So, here we go.

I decided to go over all of the brown areas again in order to darken the color and cover up any areas that may have dried thin enough to have the black primer show through. After this, I decided that I would spend my time focusing on getting the skin done. I liked what I did on the previous orcs, the ones that are already done, but wanted the highlights to pop a bit more on these so I went a little more in depth on these. I started with a nice coat of dark green.

The Setup With the color of Green used

After the second brown coat and the application of the dark green

Close up of the dark green
The dark green formed a nice base over the primer to add the next shade of green, which was considerably lighter than this.

Lighter Shade of Green
After this, I put some ink wash on these models to get the deeper parts to pop.

Wash that I use

After the wash
Once this was completed, I began to work the models with a mixture of the lighter green and brown while inking in between each application. This would hopefully ensure that the crevices would be a nice, deep green with the highlights really popping out.

Results of first application
I think I did this around 3 or 4 times if I remember correctly and things came out pretty well.

Another shot further away.
Once the experiment was completed on these three models, I proceeded to apply it to the whole unit. The remaining 7 didn't turn out as well as the original 3 as I had slept in between but they still turned out well.

Next up is trying to do the leather / armor portions of the models. Will keep you posted and be sure to let me know what you think of the work so far!

Painting Project One - Orc Boyz Unit

Greetings!

When I first began playing miniature wargames, at the beginning of college in 2000, I played Warhammer Fantasy. I had been a part of the university's Historical Miniatures Gaming group but only went to a couple of meetings where I played some bang up games of Fire and Fury. Good system and some good memories of charging my Union troops against a Confederate force stacked to defend and beating them back!

After the historical stuff, I found Warhammer, as most people seem to do at some point during their wargaming careers. I bought the sixth edition starter set that had the Orcs and Empire. Being human in all aspects, including gaming it seems, I chose to play the Empire while my bud played the Orcs. I played sixth for about 2 or 3 years and had a blast doing so. Unfortunately I had to sell off all of my minis to help pay for rent one month and I kind of fell out of the game.

Recently I have picked it back up though and have begun playing the Orcs; this in an attempt to not be the "boring humans" all the time. My fiancee is playing the Bretonnians and regularly stomps me beneath her army of horses.....er knights that is. Yes...knights. I have also begun to actually paint my models this time around as opposed to fielding the grey horde of death. Below are five models that I have already painted from the Orc Boyz unit.

5 Complete Orc Boyz

Now, the goal of this painting project is to complete the rest of the unit in the above manner. See pictures below for what I have gotten myself into.

10 Orc Boyz that have been started

15 Orc boyz that are missing arms and paint

This results in another 10 models to paint in the first picture and 15 in the bottom picture that need arms and painting. I will be updating this on a weekly basis to keep me honest with my current progress.

So, wish me luck! It's time to GET TO DA PAINTING!!!
